Yes, it would be quicker to just order one online, but our main goal is to get you the shtender that works for you (and will continue to work for years to come.)

How is payment made? Do you accept credit cards?

Payment can be made by check or credit card. If you are paying by credit card we will obtain the proper information from you when you call to place your order. An invoice with links to pay by check or credit card online will be sent once your order is placed. We do offer a discount for purchases paid by check. What is a dovetail joint and why is it considered such a good method to build furniture?

A dovetail joint is one in which the two pieces of wood to be joined are cut to fit together along the edge, much like two crossword puzzle pieces fit together. Once this joint is assembled, it is nearly impossible for it to pull apart or become misaligned.

Rather than using just screws or other metal fasteners which tend to loosen over years of use, we join the parts of our Shtenders using traditional techniques such as dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joints, wooden pins, etc. This will ensure that your Shtender will last for generations.

How do I care for my new Shtender?

Unless you requested a different finish, your Shtender is protected by a polyurethane finish that is resistant to liquids, including alcohol. An occasional wipe with a slightly damp cloth should be all that is needed to keep your Shtender looking new. No wax or polish is required to preserve this finish.

Will I be charged sales tax?

Only residents of Wisconsin or shipments going to addresses in Wisconsin will be charged sales tax. If your state requires the payment of a sales tax or use tax on merchandise ordered through the mail from out of state, you are responsible for taking care of this. If you are tax exempt, you will not be charged sales tax if you provide us with the appropriate paperwork.

What are the dimensions of the Shtender top? Can this be modified?

Most Shtenders leave our shop with a 14” x 20” top or a 16″ x 20″ top depending on model – plenty big enough for a Chumash or large siddur. If you’d like another dimension, just say so when placing your order.

Can Shtenders be made with adjustable heights?

We have tried over the years to produce a reliable mechanism for adjusting the height of a shtender. None have truly worked as well as we would like. If you insist, we can add a few inches of adjustment to a shtender, but we don’t recommend it.

What is the standard height of a Shtender?

Our ‘standard’ height is 41″, as measured from the ground to the lowest edge of the top. However, a Shtender can be made any height you’d like. If you are unsure of the height which would work for you, it helps to create a mockup of your new shtender using boxes or other items stacked on a table top.

Why are Shtenders made of certain woods more expensive?

Many species of wood are becoming rare or must be harvested from distant forests. The limited supply of these materials and the extra cost of obtaining the raw lumber add to the cost of furniture made from them.

Is a children’s model available?

Any shtender can be ordered scaled down to whatever size you need.

How long does it take to get a shtender?

For in stock items, we try to ship within 3 business days of taking the order. For anything requiring customization, it takes about a week to complete a custom shtender. Of course, sometimes our shop schedule gets backed up with orders and there may be a short wait until yours is ready. You will be notified of our schedule when you place your order. Payment is required before your shtender is placed on our production schedule.

Are other styles available?

Yes! Your new Shtender can be made in any style you choose. If you’d like, your new Shtender can be matched to other furniture in the room.

What are your Shtenders made from?

Shtenders can be built of solid hardwood or a mixture of solid hardwood and furniture-grade hardwood veneered plywood, depending on the model. All shtenders have a solid wood top to ensure a long life. The following types of wood are available: pine, maple, oak, walnut, cherry, butternut, and more. All woods can be stained to match your decor.

I just received my Shtender and notice that there is a slight space between some pieces – is this a defect?

No. On some parts of the Shtender (such as the bottom of the storage box), this is done to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of the wood. If there were not places like this built into the Shtender, cracks would develop as it aged and went through the various seasons. Be assured that these parts of the Shtender are firmly and permanently attached, usually through the use of wooden pins or tenons which hold the wood together at various points along the joint. If you look carefully, you will see the ends of these on the Shtender.
